Manchester United midfielder Donny van de Beek must “step up”

Erik ten Hag has warned Manchester United midfielder Donny van de Beek that he must “step up” or he could leave the club.

Since joining Manchester United, Van de Beek has struggled to secure a starting job. The Dutchman made a big impression in his home country with Ajax, but his move to the Premier League hasn’t worked out for him so far.

Ten Hag offered Van de Beek a chance to impress recently, starting in United’s last three games.

Following his recent displays, Ten Hag has now warned Van de Beek that he must “step up” or he could leave the club.

Donny van de Beek continues to face an uncertain future at Man United.

“I’ve seen better in the past. But I think in terms of positioning, he’s doing pretty well. But he has to take that step forward. I don’t think a loan [makes] sense. Or else fight [for] and he proves himself, in this atmosphere in this environment, or he leaves,” Ten Hag said, as reported by the Mirror.

A move away from the club could be what Van de Beek needs to progress as a player, but a temporary loan to Everton earlier this year did not go as planned.

Van de Beek once again struggled to cement a regular place at Everton despite his league struggles, so perhaps the Premier League doesn’t suit his style.
